The Joy I’ve Found from Working with Make-A-Wish
Charity doesn’t just help those in need; it helps every single person involved in the philanthropic process.
The fulfillment I’ve earned from being involved in charity work through UNIGLOBE Travel Designers has been unparalleled and unexpected, and few experiences have rewarded me as much as being able to work alongside the always amazing Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Make-A-Wish has long been one of the world’s leading children’s charities, and our involvement with them has been one of the best parts of my job.
Sometimes it’s easy to take travel for granted. You forget the joy and exhilaration that it can bring; you forget the sheer wonder that comes with experiencing a new place for the first time, and you forget what a life-changing experience it can be, that is until you start to see these trips through the lens of a child.
Upon receiving a request from Make-A-Wish, I relish opening the enclosed letters written by these children. Seeing their dreams of travel with their families spelled out, and knowing that I have the power to make these otherwise impossible vacations a reality is such a profound thrill.
We’re not just creating grand adventures, we’re providing opportunities for children to spend time with their loved ones and create cherished memories. It’s as simple as young girl who dreamed of sharing chips and salsa at the beach with her family, or the little boy who could not have been more excited to sit in the cockpit as the “co-pilot” during part of their flight to Belize.
All the wishes we get to help with are wonderful, but some touch you more than others. One of my favorites is the little girl who we were able to help visit the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. She later wrote us a letter saying that the experience touched her and made her feel very connected to Anne Frank.
Knowing what that child and her family had been going through, it gives you a lot of perspective to still see such empathy on her part, certainly enough to make anyone find gratitude for what they have.
I love being able to use my knowledge to put together the best possible trips for these kids. The first trip I planned for a child was to Australia just after I had returned from a visit there myself. Because I had learned the ins and outs of Australian travel first-hand, I was then able to give them great advice and the best possible recommendations that I knew would wow them and keep their travel free of complications.
It’s a tremendous feeling to be a part of helping everything go smoothly for families who have faced more stress and trial than most of us could ever imagine.
Make-A-Wish is truly one of the best organizations to work with. They always put the child’s needs first and will bend over backwards to make every dream come true, big or small.
Working alongside their coordinators has been a much greater reward than I could have imagined and I’m thrilled that UNIGLOBE Travel Designers will continue to partner with this amazing charity into the future.
