We’ve discussed the benefits of taking a cruise before, but once you decide to come aboard, what do you need to know? Here are our top 5 tips to help you make the most out your next cruising adventure.
1. Get a room with a balcony, or at least a view
Sure, interior rooms will be the least expensive, but you’re also giving up a lot of what makes taking a cruise special. For trips with especially beautiful cruising routes like Alaskan cruises, a view is a must! Plus it will let you experience the sights in quiet serenity.
You don’t need one of these on hand to get a great view
2. Take advantage of those excursions
Even though there will usually be more than enough activities on a cruise ship to keep you entertained, half the fun is getting off at port and exploring each destination. Some are as simple as sightseeing and tours, while some can be full-on adventures. Just make sure you’re physically up for whatever activity is planned.
The best part of planned excursions is that because the operators are working in tandem with the cruise lines you’re sure to never be late. This is why we always recommend using the cruise line’s suggested tours instead of a third party – you wouldn’t want to miss the ship’s departure!
3. Pack with a purpose
Luckily you’ll only have to unpack once and you don’t have to worry about living out of a suitcase like in most other travel, but you will have to put a little more thought into packing in the first place. Think of athletic clothes for activities, the gym, or some excursions, casual wear for your day to day, multiple swimsuits, and formal wear. Most evenings aboard a cruise ship are formal, so if you’ve been longing to break out that gown or tux, now is the time.
Also keep in mind cultural rules of dress for your port destinations.
4. Even if you don’t technically need it, bring documentation
This can mean passports (potentially), marriage licenses for newlyweds, doctor’s notes for pregnant women, and even vaccination records for children.
If only all our days could end this beautifully
5. Get expert help
Booking a cruise on your own can be overwhelming. There are so many options depending on your needs, and successfully navigating them all by yourself is nearly impossible. Travel experts like those at UNIGLOBE Travel Designers will sift through all the choices and present you with your ideal options for your budget, desires, and timetable.
They’ll let you know what extras to bring for each kind of cruise, how much cash you’ll want on hand, what gratuities you should expect to encounter, and they’ll arrange the perfect excursions so you can make the most out of your trip.
Don’t underestimate the power (and stress relief) that bringing on a profession can bring.
